Essays on representations of real groups

چکیده
This essay contains somewhat dry material most useful in motivating eventually a certain crucial but at first sight somewhat technical transition from representations of groups to representations of Lie algebras. Parts of it will also be used in the theory of automorphic forms. I have made some effort to reduce everything to well known facts inmeasure theory and topology. The standard reference for thematerial here is [Borel:1972]. I have also used [Weil:1965].

Essays on representations of real groups The real Jacquet module
If (π, V ) is an admissible representation of a p-adic reductive group G and P = MN is a parabolic subgroupwith unipotent radicalN , its Jacquet module VN is the universalN -trivial quotientH0(N,V ) of V by the span of vectors π(n)v − v (n ∈ N ). One fundamental property is that V VN is an exact functor. This construction plays an important role in homomorphisms into representations induced fro...
متن کاملEssays on representations of real groups Introduction to Lie algebras
This essay is intended to be a self-contained if rather brief introduction to Lie algebras. The first several sections deal with Lie algebras as spaces of invariant vector fields on a Lie group. The very first sections are concerned with different ways to consider vector fields. This early treatment is intended, among other things, to motivate the eventual introduction of abstract Lie algebras,...

In Cartan’s original proof, the fixed point theorem was about Riemannian spaces of negative curvature, but I’ll use instead a simpler geometric notion due to [Bruhat-Tits:1972]. This allows an argument that is somewhat shorter and more direct than the standard one presented, for example, in [Helgason:1968]. The original application of the criterion of Bruhat-Tits was to buildings, as explained ...

A smooth G module over R is a representation (π, V ) of G on an R-module V such that each v in V is fixed by an open subgroup of G. A smooth representation (π, V ) is said to be admissible if for each open subgroupK in G the subspace V K of vectors fixed by elements of K is finitely generated overR. UsuallyRwill be a field (necessarily of characteristic 0) in which case this means just that V K...
متن کاملUsing Writing Checklist in Composing Descriptive Essays Among EFL Learners at the Intermediate Level
This study investigated the impact of writing checklist on composing descriptive essays among EFL learners at the intermediate level. Sixty participants were assigned to experimental and control groups. Both groups were given a pre-test of writing a descriptive essay including 150 words. The experimental group used checklist for learning while the control used teacher correcting technique in ea...
